Of very ancient origin, it was used as a means of closing containers of various kinds and protecting
 the integrity of their contents, to guarantee the provenance of artifacts and goods and as a sign 
of identification of its owner and its properties.

With the invention of writing and with the use of the written act, the seal took on the role of 
guarantor of the act itself.

The Middle Ages, while inheriting the multiplicity of uses of the seal, developed it above
all in relation to the written act, to the point of making it the most widespread tool for
authenticating and protecting documents throughout much of Europe.
