This instrument called “notturnale” or “notturlabio” was used in the past to read the time

during the night thanks to the observation of the position of the stars around the polar star.

• Place the time disk at the beginning of the current month
• hang the nocturlab and fix the polar star through the central hole
• Align the arm parallel to an imaginary line that joins ‘alpha’ and ‘Betha’ stars of the great bear constellation
• Read the time indicated by the arm on the inner disk.
